Saine Sinclair knows a little something about what makes a story worth telling. Your childhood best friend refuses to kiss you during a pre-adolescent game of spin the bottle? Terrible, zero stars, would not replay that scene again. The same ex-friend becomes your new best friend’s ex? Strangely compelling, unexpected twist, worth a hate-watch. That same guy—why is he always around? —turns out to be your last shot at getting into the documentary filmmaking program of your dreams? Saine hates to admit it, but she’d watch that movie. There’s something about Holden that makes her feel like she’s the one in front of the camera—like he can see every uncomfortable truth she’s buried below the surface. Saine knows how her story’s supposed to go. So why does every moment with Holden seem intent on changing the ending?

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Andrea

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">I was very lucky to read an early copy of this book and it's every bit as wonderful as Rodkey's debut, LAST CHANCE BOOKS.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Rodkey is the queen of endearingly unlikable main characters, and Saine fills that role perfectly. She's relatably flawed, driven, hilarious, and cares deeply for those around her. Those traits lead to the perfect storm when Saine is faced with navigating the very precarious relationships between ex boyfriends and best friends, in order to achieve her goals.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">There's amazing banter, a swoony romance, a fast-paced plot and a well-rounded cast of characters. But Leonora has a double identity as she is also the masked vigilante Pantera who fights for the rights of the people and supports the overthrowing of the Spanish ruling. This book had lots of little twists and turns as well as some I guessed at but was pleasantly surprised by the ones I didn't see coming. I loved the scene setting and hope there will be a prequel as to how Leonora became Pantera and her life when she went missing from the woods as a child. I really couldn't put this book down and flew through the pages. This book gave me Zorro vibes along with Avatar at times. If you love books rich in folklore and are interested in Mexican history, you must give this a read.
Glenys Bichanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08547450118906518449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-69798049377977993.post-74478382439200830922024-03-06T13:00:00.002+13:002024-03-06T13:00:15.938+13:00Deadlands- Trapped
By: Skye Melki- Wegner

Location: FIC MEL

Genre: Dragons Fantasy

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Wings of Fire meets Jurassic Park in The Deadlands: Trapped , the second book of this action-adventure series by Skye Melki-Wegner about five outcasts ― and former enemies ― who are the only hope to save their warring kingdoms from impending doom.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">As bloody battle rages on between the two surviving dinosaur kingdoms, Eleri and his fellow outcasts, newly exiled from their herds, are searching for evidence to prove a mass conspiracy―a conniving cabal of carnivores have manipulated the herbivore kingdoms into war, so they can feast on the slain. Tying a story of both elves and fae, we see Yeeran and Lettle delve into a world unfamiliar to their own, forced to reframe their entire world narrative in the process. It was fascinating learning alongside them, and their feelings/thoughts seemed so authentic for the situations they were forced into. Their sisterly dynamic was fiercely protective but also one of sibling annoyance, and it was easy to become invested in their story. With various romances explored (F/M and Sapphic) and the stakes ever-changing, this story had me turning the pages effortlessly. I can’t wait to see where the rest of the series goes!
Glenys Bichanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08547450118906518449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-69798049377977993.post-20102618047487179382023-11-08T10:39:00.004+13:002023-11-08T10:39:34.417+13:00Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
By Brandon Sanderson

Location: FIC SAN

Genre: Sanderson

Series: Cosmere Universe

Brandon Sandersons personal favourite!!!!

<span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600;">#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings us a gripping story set in the Cosmere universe told by Hoid, where two people from incredibly different worlds must compromise and work together to save their worlds from ruin.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Yumi comes from a land of gardens, meditation, and spirits, while Painter lives in a world of darkness, technology, and nightmares. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.
Glenys Bichanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08547450118906518449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-69798049377977993.post-1574866825056365382023-11-08T10:33:00.007+13:002023-11-08T10:33:54.801+13:00How To Be Remembered

By: Michael Thompson

Location: FIC THO

Genre: Fiction, Fantasy, Magic Realism,

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">"What a gorgeous, heartwarming, magical tale. A bizarre mystery surrounding a family tragedy forms the centrepiece of Rachel's struggle as an astonishingly beautiful mixed-race child in a mostly black community. As terrible secrets begin to emerge, Rachel learns to swallow her grief and construct her self-image in a world that wants to see her as either Black or White.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">

Reviews- Britany McCann

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">'m not sure how this book found its way into my life, but I am glad it did. The reader is experiencing this intro into a culture she was mainly removed from. To be honest, the initial interpretations through Rachel's eyes are a bit disconcerting and off-putting. Luckily, I decided to keep going.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">As the story unfolds, snippets of the past are shown through multiple narrative points to help the reader guess some unspecified tragedy that led Rachel to live with her grandmother. As Rachel grows and struggles with the mystery, and more of it comes to life, we see Rachel's attempt to grasp for control in her adolescent life destructively.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">These characters are flawed, and Rachel's mother's voice of the past is the most heard and has a major impact on Rachel as she makes her foray into motherhood. Much could be speculated and deduced from the possible comparison between these two. As the story unfolds, we see that the majority of these characters come from one broken home or another. Generational behavior patterns and struggles with coping mechanisms come to light along the way.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Issues for me as a reader: the overall prevalence that Rachel was somehow more "elite" than "normal/regular" black people, as well as the repeated words and actions that showed that she was "more beautiful" for being mixed instead of "full black." Her father didn't have more of a voice in the narration when he was such a large part of the story. The lack of accountability or consequence to a character played the hell out of Rachel. (I will admit that this is likely the true case, but it was irksome all the same).

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e1915; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">The unveil was heartbreaking, and I could feel it in my heart. Heidi W. Durrow did well with this; I still felt that connection even if there were gaps in much of the story. There is much to talk about in this book, especially for me as a single white mother of a mixed son and the struggle to help him be his most authentic self. In the water, she can stretch herself out like a starfish and take up all the room she wants. It’s also where she can get away from her pushy mom, who thinks criticizing Ellie’s weight will motivate her to diet. Fortunately, Ellie has allies in her dad, her therapist, and her new neighbor, Catalina, who loves Ellie for who she is. With this support buoying her, Ellie might finally be able to cast aside the Fat Girl Rules and starfish in real life—by unapologetically being her own fabulous self.
Glenys Bichanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08547450118906518449noreply@blogger.com0
