 By: Brian McClellan

But when his mother is brutally murdered, Demir must return from exile to claim his seat at the head of the family and uncover the truth that got her killed: the very power that keeps civilization turning, godglass, is running out.

Now, Demir must find allies, old friends and rivals alike, confront the powerful guild-families who are only interested in making the most of the scraps left at the table and uncover the invisible hand that threatens the Empire. A war is coming, a war unlike any other. And Demir and his ragtag group of outcasts are the only thing that stands in the way of the end of life as the world knows it.

Review by Zak

In the Shadow of Lightning is an easy read with a clear destination that takes a surprising turn toward the end. Not the ending itself—that was everything you expected it to be, in a good way—but the direction of the world and series. There is a lot to enjoy about this book, but it is the promise of where the series is headed that excites me the most.

My favorite parts of this book were the pacing and the magic. Once again, McClellan has created a fully fleshed out magic system that interacts gracefully with the world, cultures, and economics. It's also just super cool, which, honestly, is also important. As an author, I found myself feeling similar pangs of jealousy as when I read Jade City, wishing I'd come up with it! And for the pacing, this really just kept me engaged throughout with the mysteries, investigations, engineering, and more.

While there were a few beautiful moments between characters, I do think that those readers looking for more character-driven books will find this one lacking. For me, I liked each of the characters and enjoyed this quite thoroughly.

Matts review

"Going into this book, I was quite confident that it wasn't going to be for me. In general, I haven't really like the Brandon Sanderson one-off books in the past, and knowing that this book is more YA (a category I don't normally enjoy), this had "DNF" written all over it.

And while reading the first 20% of this book my predictions were correct, I didn't like the characters, didn't love the setting, and thought the writing style was trying to be far too humorous, which I don't think Brandon Sanderson excels at.

To my incredible surprise, the plot quickly picks up the pace and turns into an incredibly fun adventure full of amazing characters with great personal growth, an enchanting world, an inventive and fun magic system, great plot twists that I truly didn't see coming (but should have - the hallmark of a great twist), and a wonderful ending.

By the end of this book I was full of smiles while reading, and was regretting getting to the end of this book. I can't wait for my kids to get older so I can read them to them and see the wonder in their eyes as they experience this fantastic adventure story."

The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn’t right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?

"i did not go into this expecting to read a ghost story but, surprisingly, i enjoyed it! i thought the paranormal aspect worked well with the plot and made this particular cold case mystery all the more thrilling, if not more spooky.

this also incorporates blogs and podcasts and all sort of popular true crime reporting used today into the narrative, so i think that will appeal to a lot of readers. its fun and engaging and has the right atmosphere for a ghost story.

this is only the second book that i have read by SSJ, but this has me wanting to read more!" Jessica

A Hunger of Thorns

 By: Lili Wilkinson

The Lost Apothecary meets Dead Dead Girls in this fast-paced, STEMinist adventure.

Debut author Kate Khavari deftly entwines a pulse-pounding mystery with the struggles of a woman in a male-dominated field in 1923 London.

Newly minted research assistant Saffron Everleigh is determined to blaze a new trail at the University College London, but with her colleagues’ beliefs about women’s academic inabilities and not-so-subtle hints that her deceased father’s reputation paved her way into the botany department, she feels stymied at every turn.

Better Than The Movies

Genre: Romance

“Sometimes we get so tied up in our idea of what we think we want that we miss out on the amazingness of what we could actually have.”
― Lynn Painter, Better than the Movies

Perfect for fans of Kasie West and Jenn Bennett, this “sweet and funny” (Kerry Winfrey, author of Waiting for Tom Hanks ) teen rom-com follows a hopelessly romantic teen girl and her cute yet obnoxious neighbor as they scheme to get her noticed by her untouchable crush.

Perpetual daydreamer Liz Buxbaum gave her heart to Michael a long time ago. But her cool, aloof forever crush never really saw her before he moved away. Now that he’s back in town, Liz will do whatever it takes to get on his radar—and maybe snag him as a prom date—even befriend Wes Bennet.

The annoyingly attractive next-door neighbor might seem like a prime candidate for romantic comedy fantasies, but Wes has only been a pain in Liz’s butt since they were kids. Pranks involving frogs and decapitated lawn gnomes do not a potential boyfriend make. Yet, somehow, Wes and Michael are hitting it off, which means Wes is Liz’s in.

But as Liz and Wes scheme to get Liz noticed by Michael so she can have her magical prom moment, she’s shocked to discover that she likes being around Wes. And as they continue to grow closer, she must reexamine everything she thought she knew about love—and rethink her own ideas of what Happily Ever After should look like.

The Atlas Paradox

 By: Olivie Blake

Location: FIC BLA

Genre: Fantasy Fiction LGBT

The Atlas Paradox is the long-awaited sequel to dark academic sensation The Atlas Six—guaranteed to have even more yearning, backstabbing, betrayal, and chaos.

Six magicians. Two rivalries. One researcher. And a man who can walk through dreams. All must pick a side: do they wish to preserve the world—or destroy it? In this electric sequel to the viral sensation, The Atlas Six, the society of Alexandrians is revealed for what it is: a secret society with raw, world-changing power, headed by a man whose plans to change life as we know it are already under way. But the cost of knowledge is steep, and as the price of power demands each character choose a side, which alliances will hold and which will see their enmity deepen?”

Great interview with the author here:

Can we expect more Filipino characters in the future? Can you give us a hint on what they’ll be like?

There is another character coming in the next installment of the Atlas series who is Filipina in origin. Even in book 1, before she arrived in the story, I knew I was going to face the subject of climate change and global resource inequity head-on from the perspective of someone from a country without Western political capital—a country that, despite being severely affected by climate change, would be unfairly overlooked on a global stage. Like, say, an island nation that stands to lose millions of dollars and hundreds of lives annually as sea levels continue to rise and extreme weather poses a constant threat, but doesn’t register for long on the average American-dominated Twitter feed.

It’s pretty ugly to phrase it that way, I know, but I think it’s a realistic ugliness—just as imperialism has determined the location of the Alexandrian Society, colonialism has determined who gets to dominate the narratives we read. It was a conscious choice for me to take someone with the motivations and rhetorical prowess of Greta Thunberg, but with arguably higher geographic stakes and without the whiteness that makes her more universally palatable. (Which is not to diminish Greta, who is admirable in countless ways—it’s just to point out what might potentially serve as added social capital, or what might be taken as more of a threat purely as a result of the optics.)

The Filipina character of Belen Jiménez isn’t like Bel Maier, who is based on my personal experience growing up first-gen. But Belen is still personal in that she’s the kind of woman who dominated my familial narrative. She’s partially modeled off the way my godmother dressed after she first arrived in California; she’s named after my mom’s best friend at university and carries my grandmother’s maiden name; her adopted moniker comes from my great-grandmother. Belen will likely be called a minor character in terms of being outside the series’ six main points of view, but she is critical to the story I’m telling about knowledge and power.

Nubia

 By: Omar Epps

Location: FIC EPP

Genre: Sci fi, Dystopia, Fantasy

"I really enjoyed this cultural urban fantasy tale. Climate change, racism, social classes, political corruption, abuse, death, friendship, family ties, ancestry, magic and more. It had just enough and never too much."

From beloved actor and producer Omar Epps and writer Clarence A. Haynes comes the biggest epic fantasy of the year. A powerful saga of three teens, the children of refugees from a fallen African utopia, who must navigate their newfound powers in a climate-ravaged New York City. Perfect for fans of Black Panther and Children of Blood and Bone.

For Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho, Nubia is a mystery. Before they were born, a massive storm destroyed their ancestral homeland, forcing their families to flee across the ocean to New York City. Nubia, a utopic island nation off the coast of West Africa, was no more, and their parents' sorrow was too deep for them to share much of their history beyond the folklore.

But New York, ravaged by climate change and class division, is far from a safe haven for refugees, and Nubians live as outcasts, struggling to survive in the constantly flooding lower half of Manhattan, while the rich thrive in the tech-driven sky city known as the Up High.

To many, being Nubian means you're fated for a life plagued by difficulties and disrespect. But Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho are beginning to feel there might be more. Something within them is changing, giving each of them extraordinary powers. Extraordinary and terrifying powers that seem to be tied to the secrets their parents have kept from them.

And there are people Up High watching, eager to do anything they can to become even more powerful than they already are. Now Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho will be faced with the choice--do they use their inheritance to lift their people, or to leave them behind. The fate of their city, and their people, hangs in the balance.

Review from Goodreads

The cover alone is stunning, but, the story really blew me away. Around 40% I could not stop reading this book.

I loved how the story was told from the different perspectives of the characters. It was a unique futuristic story but still had some current aspects. The writing is good, the characters were likable, and the flow of the story was pretty good paced. It was carefully detailed and I could totally picture things as they happened.

The Nubian people are a group of outsiders living in the slums of New York in the late 2090s & they are at the bottom of the totem pole. However, the younger Nubians notice different things happening to them and it is revealed that they have special powers- the Awakening. I liked the suspense around the young characters coming into their new powers. The villain in the story played a huge role-the corruption and brainwashing caused all kind of chaos in the story. I am really curious to see if there will be more of this story because the ending alludes to there being more. I am advocating for a tv series or movie adaptation, I want more. Good read!

Seven Percent of Ro Devereux

Genre: Romance, Contemporary, Stem

Fans of Emma Lord, Rachel Lynn Solomon, and Alex Light will love this clever, charming, and poignant debut novel with a masterful slow-burn romance at its core about a girl who must decide whether to pursue her dreams or preserve her relationships, including a budding romance with her ex-best friend, when an app she created goes viral. Ro Devereux can predict your future. Or, at least, the app she built for her senior project can. Working with her neighbor, a retired behavioral scientist, Ro created an app called MASH, designed around the classic game Mansion Apartment Shack House, that can predict a person’s future with 93% accuracy. The app will even match users with their soulmates. Though it was only supposed to be a class project, MASH quickly takes off and gains the attention of tech investors. Ro’s dream is to work in Silicon Valley, and she’ll do anything to prove to her new backing company—and the world—that the app works. So it’s a huge shock when the app says her soulmate is Miller, her childhood best friend with whom she had a friendship-destroying fight three years ago. Now thrust into a fake dating scenario, Ro and Miller must address the years of pain between them if either of them will have any chance of achieving their dreams. And as the app takes on a life of its own, Ro sees that it’s affecting people in ways she never expected—and if she can’t regain control, it might take her and everything she believes in down with it.

“This is the worst,” Miller says. We’re a foot apart, and he doesn’t touch me. “There is no silver lining. This is impossible, and you’re going to get through it.” He doesn’t tell me it’s okay. He doesn’t say: but you’ll get through it. He gives me the gift of the truth—that if I do make it past this, it will be an and. I will be all right, and this will devastate me. Both things true at once.”

SOON TO BE A MOVIE!!!!

Review by Khan from Goodreads

Warning: SCARY PICTURES. Do not click on this review if you don't want to be plagued by nightmares. I don't care how old you are. Fear transcends all age barriers.

I'm a supporter of childhood literacy, but I beg you. Please, for the love of all that is holy, do not make the mistake of giving this book to your children. They will never forgive you. Think of all the therapy costs.

When I was a little girl, I was terrified of the dark. I couldn't sleep without my rituals. All blankets had to be tucked in completely around me. All closet doors must be closed. Before bed, the room must be checked to for all odd-looking shadows that might morph into something terrifying when I open my eyes in the middle of the night.

Above all, all toes must be secured, or else something will munch on them.

It didn't help me when I was 12.

I read 5 pages of this book, and I couldn't go on. I don't know if you've seen the drawings, but this book is absolutely fucking terrifying. If you have children, please, please do not give this book to your child. It will scar them for life.

It took me years to summon the courage to open this book again. I was 16. I had just watched It. I couldn't sleep for 2 weeks afterwards for longer than 30 minute increments. I could barely stay awake in class. It was horrible. Surely, after surviving the horrors of Pennywise the Clown, I could...possibly? maybe? take on this book again?

I was wrong.

I got to "THE THING" before shoving it into the back of the closet (IF I CAN'T SEE IT, THE MONSTERS DON'T EXIST) and ran to the living room.

Monsters won't eat you when you're with your parents.

The artist for this book is Stephen Gammell. Thank you, Mr. Gammell. I hope you sleep well, you diabolical crafter of nightmares. Who knows how many children and adults you have scared. Who knows how many hours of terror and sleepless nights this book has wrought. Stephen King has nothing on you.

I'm a grown-ass woman, and tonight, I'm still going to sleep with one eye open.
