The Fireborne Blade

 By: Charlotte Bond

Location: FIC BON

Genre: Fantasy and Dragons

COVER ART ALERT- BEST IN 2025 SO FAR!!!

Kill the dragon. Find the blade. Reclaim her honor.

It’s that, or end up like countless knights before her, as a puddle of gore and molten armor.

Maddileh is a knight. There aren’t many women in her line of work, and it often feels like the sneering and contempt from her peers is harder to stomach than the actual dragon slaying. But she’s a knight, and made of sterner stuff.

A minor infraction forces her to redeem her honor in the most dramatic way possible, she must retrieve the fabled Fireborne Blade from its keeper, legendary dragon the White Lady, or die trying. If history tells us anything, it's that “die trying” is where to wager your coin.

Maddileh’s tale contains a rich history of dragons, ill-fated knights, scheming squires, and sapphic love, with deceptions and double-crosses that will keep you guessing right up to its dramatic conclusion. Ultimately, The Fireborne Blade is about the roles we refuse to accept, and of the place we make for ourselves in the world.

Review by Bethany:

This was great! I love a fantasy novella and The Fireborne Blade effectively encapsulates a complete story with interesting characters, while introducing us to a new world. I also didn't see the twist at the end coming. It follows a queer woman who is a knight, on a quest to get a blade back from a dragon and reclaim her honor. It's told in a split timeline, and in the past we also meet a woman who is secretly being trained by a mage, even though women aren't really supposed to be. It's an adventure story about ambitious, talented women trying to make space for themselves in a man's world. Definitely worth a read! It's fast paced and fun

..This book brought me so much joy and even sparked my interest in the D&D game universe. The characters are well-crafted, genuine, and compelling, making it impossible for me to put down.

When it comes to romance, sometimes it doesn't hurt to play games. A fun YA romcom full of fake dating hijinks!

Musical lover Riley has big aspirations to become a director on Broadway. Crucial to this plan is to bring back her high school’s spring musical, but when Riley takes her mom’s car without permission, she's grounded and stuck with the worst punishment: spending her after-school hours working at her dad’s game shop.

Riley can't waste her time working when she has a musical to save, so she convinces Nathan—a nerdy teen employee—to cover her shifts and, in exchange, she’ll flirt with him to make his gamer-girl crush jealous.

But Riley didn’t realize that meant joining Nathan's Dungeons & Dragons game…or that role playing would be so fun. Soon, Riley starts to think that flirting with Nathan doesn't require as much acting as she would've thought...

The Hanging City

 By: Charlie Holmberg

Location: FIC HOL

Genre: Romantasy

For a young woman who wields the power of fear, humanity’s greatest enemy is her only hope in a new fairy-tale adventure by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg.

Seven years on the run from her abusive father, and with no hope of sanctuary among the dwindling pockets of human civilization, Lark is out of options. Her only leverage is a cursed power: she can thrust fear onto others, leaving all threats fleeing in terror. It’s a means of survival as she searches for a place to call home. If the campfire myths of her childhood are true, Lark’s sole chance for refuge could lie in Cagmar, the city of trolls—a brutal species and the sworn enemies of humanity.

Valuing combat prowess, the troll high council is intrigued. Lark could be much more useful than the low-caste humans who merely labor in Cagmar. Her gift makes her invaluable as a monster slayer to fight off the unspeakable creatures that torment the trolls’ hanging city, suspended from a bridge over an endless dark canyon.

Lark will do anything to make Cagmar her home, but her new role comes with a caveat: use her power against a troll, and she’ll be killed. Her loyalty is quickly put to the test when she draws the hatred of a powerful troll who loathes humankind. Still, she finds unexpected friendship in the city and, even more surprisingly, love. But if everything else doesn’t undo her, being caught in the arms of a troll surely will. Now in the fight of her life, Lark has a lot to learn—about her past, about trust and hope when all seems lost, and above all, about the extraordinary power of fear itself.

Review by Sveta

Callis or Lark, as she likes to call herself, has a gift or a course that makes her run from town to town in search of a family and a life. She can induce fear in people and creatures around her. Her father was using her in his plans and at 12 she left home and was hunted by her father's men.

She gets access to the hanging city of Cagman built by trolls and hopes to befriend humans that live there. But she is different from them and gets a job as a monster hunter, making her different even between trolls with their 8 stage system. Only the High Council knows about her power and she was forbidden to use it against trolls.

The story tells us about a person who is different from others but still hopes to find her happiness and her love. And about love that doesn't require you to meet a person similar to you to be happy. Love is not about the same looks, but the same souls and beliefs.

Very kind book with an ending that inspires hope for a better future.

This was my sixth book by Charlie N. Holmberg . And like all other authors' books, it is full of kindness and sacrifice for loved ones. I recommend it as a read for people who love fantasy or romance books.

Dragonfruit

 By: Makiia Lucier

Location: FIC LUC

Genre: Fantasy

Lucier has combined Pacific Islander mythology with a beautifully crafted plot and characters you’ll want to be friends with.

From acclaimed author Makiia Lucier, a dazzling, romantic fantasy inspired by Pacific Island mythology.

In the old tales, it is written that the egg of a seadragon, dragonfruit, holds within it the power to undo a person’s greatest sorrow. An unwanted marriage, a painful illness, and unpaid debt ... gone. But as with all things that promise the moon and the stars and offer hope when hope has gone, the tale comes with a warning.

Every wish demands a price.

Hanalei of Tamarind is the cherished daughter of an old island family. But when her father steals a seadragon egg meant for an ailing princess, she is forced into a life of exile. In the years that follow, Hanalei finds solace in studying the majestic seadragons that roam the Nominomi Sea. Until, one day, an encounter with a female dragon offers her what she desires most. A chance to return home, and to right a terrible wrong.

Samahtitamahenele, Sam, is the last remaining prince of Tamarind. But he can never inherit the throne, for Tamarind is a matriarchal society. With his mother ill and his grandmother nearing the end of her reign. Sam is left with two to marry, or to find a cure for the sickness that has plagued his mother for ten long years. When a childhood companion returns from exile, she brings with her something he has not felt in a very long time - hope.

But Hanalei and Sam are not the only ones searching for the dragonfruit. And as they battle enemies both near and far, there is another danger they cannot escape…that of the dragonfruit itself.

Laura Purcell’s captivating atmosphere and compelling mystery distinguish ‘Moonstone’ within the realm of the YA Gothic Fantasy Romance genre. From the first page, Purcell immerses readers in a haunting and atmospheric setting reminiscent of classic gothic literature. Eerie woods, a secluded farmhouse and mysterious occurrences build a sense of imminent foreboding. Mystery, suspense and plot twists meld together to create an engaging narrative.
As the protagonist Camille undergoes a significant amount of development throughout the story. Her journey from a sheltered young woman to a more independent and resilient individual was incredibly appreciated and necessary. At the beginning of the book, it is difficult to connect with her fully (which is understandable given her privileged upbringing) but her charm grows as her naivety wears off. Lucy was a closed book in the beginning, and it took a while for us to truly get to know her without al of her guards up. Once we managed to meet and truly know her, she became a favourite character.
I loved seeing the characters grapple with the societal restraints of the regency era, and their hunger for truth as they sought out freedom and their sense of identity.
The revelation of secrets, and resolution of conflicts provided closure and a sense of fulfilment by the end of the book. However, the ending did feel slightly rushed when compared to the slower paced beginning and middle.

💖
LIKES:
⋆ I loved the gothic vibes and regency setting in this novel. It made for a lovely mood and definitely added to the mystery and intrigue.
⋆ This was the sort of novel where you find yourself interested in the side characters, and curious to know more about their backstories.
⋆ I loved loved loved who the FMC ended up with.

❤️‍🩹
DISLIKES:
⋆ The pacing was slower in the beginning and middle and made the ending feel slightly rushed. I know there are publishing limitations (especially within the YA genre) and sometimes not every page can be fit into the final copy but i would have appreciated more pages dedicated to the climax and conclusion.
⋆ Without giving spoilers, i would have loved more build up and romantic tension between the relationships in this story. I’d like to note that i do appreciate and enjoy the romantic couple that ended up together. 💖💖

Sunderwolrd#1 The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry

 By: Ransom Riggs

Location: FIC RIG

Genre: Fantasy

The much-anticipated new fantasy series from Ransom Riggs, his first since introducing the #1 global phenomenon Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series.

Seventeen-year-old Leopold Berry is seeing weird things around Los Angeles. A man who pops a tooth into a parking meter. A glowing trapdoor in a parking lot. A half-mechanical raccoon with its tail on fire that just won’t leave him alone. Every hallucinatory moment seems plucked from a cheesy 1990s fantasy TV show called Max's Adventures in Sunderworld—and that’s because they are.

Not a good sign.

In the blurry weeks after his mother’s death, a young Leopold discovered VHS tapes of its one and only season in a box headed for the trash—and soon became obsessed. Losing himself in Sunder was the best way to avoid two things: grieving his mother and being a chronic disappointment to his overbearing father. But when the strange visions return—at the worst possible time on the worst possible day—Leopold turns to his best friend Emmet for help. Together they discover that Sunder is much more than just an old TV show, and that Los Angeles is far stranger than they ever imagined. And soon, he’ll realize that not only is Sunderworld real, but it’s in grave danger.

Certain he’s finally been chosen for greatness, Leopold risks everything to claim his destiny, save the world of his childhood dreams, and prove once and for all that he’s not the disappointment his father believes him to be. But when everything goes terribly, horribly, excruciatingly wrong, Leopold’s disappointments prove to be more extraordinary than he ever could have imagined.

How do you battle darkness when no one believes in you—not even yourself?

Welcome to Sunderworld.

Review by Jo

Leopold is a silly, charming, relatable character you can’t help but cheer for. He’s so much like the protagonists you love in other books, but different in little ways that make him unique and unforgettable. The supporting cast is fantastic as well, even if they have very little page time. But where a lot of the magic lies is in, well, the magic– the world. Sunder Hill. The nostalgia a lot of us feel seeing the cover of this book? That same nostalgia practically oozes out of the pages. Ransom Riggs has created a vibrant world full of neon lights, deserts at sundown, diners with your favorite pie, and a city with little bits of magic squeezed into every crevice.

I highly recommend you read about Leopold’s journey as he navigates the extraordinary disappointments of his life because you’ll have a blast, I promise!

A Tempest of Tea

 By: Hafsah Faizal

Location: FICFAI-

Genre: Fantasy

“Why save the world when you can have tea?!”

A Tempest of Tea by bestselling author Hafsah Faizal, first in a duology pitched as King Arthur meets Peaky Blinders with vampires. The novel follows a gang of outcasts in a deadly heist led by Arthie Casimir to save her tearoom—which fronts an illegal blood house, where local vampires can purchase fresh blood. Publication of the first novel is set for Fall 2022; Josh Adams at Adams Literary did the two-book deal for world English rights.

Nilufer says this about this books and her reviews are the best:

A Tempest of Tea blends the grit of a heist with the allure of vampire intrigue, set against a backdrop of colonial tension and societal divisions. Arthie Casimir’s tearoom, which secretly doubles as a bloodhouse for the city's vampires, makes for a unique and fascinating setting, although it feels somewhat underexplored at times. When her sanctuary is threatened, she assembles a motley crew to infiltrate the dangerous Athereum, but their journey unravels into more than just a high-stakes heist.

While the premise brims with potential, the pacing struggles to find its rhythm, with moments of thrilling action punctuated by slower stretches that make it difficult to fully immerse in the world. Arthie, despite her criminal mastermind status, often feels emotionally distant, which can make it challenging to fully connect with her. However, her fierce determination and complex emotions regarding her heritage and the city’s power structures add depth to her character.

Jin’s charm and humor are standout elements, bringing much-needed lightness to the story, while Flick’s resilience makes her a compelling presence. The romance, though at times overshadowed by the central plot, offers moments of genuine warmth. Yet, some of the romantic arcs feel rushed, leaving little room for the chemistry to truly sizzle.

The novel shines brightest in its thematic explorations of colonialism, racism, and belonging, touching on issues that resonate far beyond its fantasy world. The dynamic between first- and second-generation immigrants is sensitively portrayed, and Faizal weaves these elements seamlessly into the narrative, giving it a contemporary relevance that grounds the story amidst the fantastical.

Overall, A Tempest of Tea is an ambitious start to a new duology, with intriguing characters and a plot filled with conspiracies and betrayals. While it stumbles in pacing and character development, its unique setting and timely themes make it a novel worth diving into, especially for fans of Faizal’s previous work.

The Deep Sky

Location: FIC KIT

Genre: Sci Fi

A very strong debut! This is a page turning space thriller of espionage and intrigue, chock full of commentary on climate change, existential dread, and mommy issues.

Yume Kitasei's The Deep Sky is an enthralling sci fi thriller debut about a mission into deep space that begins with a lethal explosion that leaves the survivors questioning the loyalty of the crew.

They left Earth to save humanity. They’ll have to save themselves first.

It is the eve of Earth’s environmental collapse. A single ship carries humanity’s last eighty elite graduates of a competitive program, who will give birth to a generation of children in deep space. But halfway to a distant but livable planet, a lethal bomb kills three of the crew and knocks The Phoenix off course. Asuka, the only surviving witness, is an immediate suspect.

As the mystery unfolds on the ship, poignant flashbacks reveal how Asuka came to be picked for the mission. Despite struggling through training back on Earth, she was chosen to represent Japan, a country she only partly knows as a half-Japanese girl raised in America. But estranged from her mother back home, The Phoenix is all she has left.

With the crew turning on each other, Asuka is determined to find the culprit before they all lose faith in the mission―or worse, the bomber strikes again.

One of the best sci-fi novels I've read in a long time!! The premise of artificial intelligence forming emotional attachments is interesting. How do you teach or program empathy?

The Reformatory

 By: Tananarive Due

Location: FIC DUE

Genre: Horror

The Reformatory is a dark, emotional, scary, powerful and thrilling read.

Heartbreaking, devastating, and horrifying - yet also, somehow, hopeful.

A gloriously creepy Deep South horror story based on the infamous Dozier School for boys, perfect for fans of The Only Good Indians and Nothing But Blackened Teeth.

Jim Crow Florida, 1950. Twelve-year-old Robert Stephens Jr., who for a trivial scuffle with a white boy is sent to The Gracetown School for Boys. But the segregated reformatory is a chamber of horrors, haunted by the boys that have died there. In order to survive the school governor and his Funhouse, Robert must enlist the help of the school's ghosts – only they have their own motivations...

This was a great book. It’s a historical fiction about a 12 year old boy, Robbie, living in Florida in 1950 when he is sent to a reformatory school for a crime that is not actually a crime… but Robbie is poor and black and that’s why he’s sentenced. It’s a very eye opening experience to read about the horrific conditions in which black people were (and are) treated and especially how these reformatory schools were run. The other aspect of this book which was pretty interesting is that there’s a paranormal theme of the boys who were killed at the reformatory and still haunt their halls. But the horror of the ghosts is no where close to the horror of the men who run the school.

Very good book!  it’s an important read and I’m so glad I read it!  Review by Scott

Sherlock Holmes is her favourite detective. She even named her dog Watson after his faithful companion, and trained him to sniff out clues and follow trails.

So far, Dilly and Watson haven’t cracked many cases – beyond lost cats, or missing biscuits that turned out to have been eaten all along.
