Genre:Mystery, Thriller

"Clever, and compelling, with a humdinger of a twist- I hope the ‘Silent’ Patient ‘speaks’ to you too!"- Maureen

The instant #1 New York Times bestseller

"An unforgettable—and Hollywood-bound—new thriller... A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy."
Entertainment Weekly

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him.

“...we often mistake love for fireworks - for drama and dysfunction. But real love is very quiet, very still. It's boring, if seen from the perspective of high drama. Love is deep and calm - and constant.”

Dread Nation

Image result for 9780062570611By: Justina Ireland
Location: FIC IRE
Genre:It is everything, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Horror with some Zombies too!
Series: Dread Nation #1

Rated 4.12 with 12,000 reviews on Goodreads which mean this book is very very good, just like its cover.

I just watched the movie "Lincoln" what a man. Knowing more about him made the Gettysburg speech so much more powerful. I always hope that back in the day I would be on the side that fights for human rights, dignity, and equality. I would like to think that I would be part of the Black Sash in Capetown, that I would be a suffragette, that I would be an abolitionist. Maybe I need to start looking around and see what I need to fight for more in today's world.  Then there is this quote
“See, the problem in this world ain’t sinners, or even the dead. It is men who will step on anyone who stands in the way of their pursuit of power.” This is for you D Trump!
Enough of my rant- back to the book...

"This is the perfect blend of horror, fantasy and alternate history. Blends beautifully with known history and current zombie myth."

At once provocative, terrifying, and darkly subversive, Dread Nation is Justina Ireland's stunning vision of an America both foreign and familiar—a country on the brink, at the explosive crossroads where race, humanity, and survival meet.

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania—derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever.

In this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Education Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead.

But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It's a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations.

But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston's School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose.

But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies.

And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems.

"Five humongous stars! This book was so incredible. You have the girls who are just trying to survive in an unjust world while also being the front line fighters against zombie like creatures. Jane and Kate were so amusing to read about and amazingly well written and deep characters. There is so much more to this book than just being a zombie book so I hope people take more from it than that.

My quick and simple overall: this book was beyond entertaining. It was thought invoking and you just don’t take that away from a lot of fantasy books nowadays. Loved it!!!! "Suzanna

"It’s fun, suspenseful, and a little bit silly. And Prettyboy is pretty cool.

"This is an over the top adventure – a pure fun adrenaline rush – and I’m very glad I got to read it!"

#prettyboymustdie was right up my alley. I very much love espionage, hacking and spies...especially if it's teens--because you don't expect it. So the book, definitely had that going for it.

It was also pretty action-packed from the very beginning. The author wasted no time getting right down to it." Goodreads reviews

A CIA prodigy's cover is blown when he accidentally becomes an internet sensation in #Prettyboy Must Die, Kimberly Reid's fun, fast thriller inspired by the sensational social media #Alexfromtarget story.

When Peter Smith’s classmate snaps a picture of him during a late night run at the track, Peter thinks he might be in trouble. When she posts that photo—along with the caption, “See the Pretty Boy Run,”—Peter knows he’s in trouble. But when hostiles drop through the ceiling of his 6th period Chem Class, Peter’s pretty sure his trouble just became a national emergency.

Because he’s not really Peter Smith. He’s Jake Morrow, former foster-kid turned CIA operative. After a massive screw-up on his first mission, he's on a pity assignment, a dozen hit lists and now, social media, apparently. As #Prettyboy, of all freaking things.

His cover’s blown, his school’s under siege, and if he screws up now, #Prettyboy will become #Deadboy faster than you can say, 'fifteen minutes of fame.' Trapped in a high school with rabid killers and rabid fans, he’ll need all his training and then some to save his job, his school and, oh yeah, his life.

Rhett and his new friends have a hard enough time fighting back the monsters that grow bolder and more ferocious every day. But then a new threat emerges, a demon who wants something that Rhett has. And if she gets it, it could mean the end of everything... for both the living and the dead.

"This book took me COMPLETELY by surprise!

I quickly got caught up in the fantastic mythology.

To sum it up, this book felt like a mixture of Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and a modern spin on Greek mythology.

I loved the writing style, particularly when it came to the action scenes which were fantastic, and also the plot twists which were extremely unexpected.

The characters were varied and interesting, keeping me engaged throughout and the mythology is fascinating, especially the ship itself, and its changing nature.

Taylor's talent is one to watch as his writing voice is certain to reel in reluctant readers and avid readers alike. " Goodreads

Hey, Kiddo

Image result for 9780545902489
By: Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Location: GRA KRO
Genre: Graphic Novel- Family stuff. Memoir

In kindergarten, Jarrett Krosoczka's teacher asks him to draw his family, with a mommy and a daddy. But Jarrett's family is much more complicated than that. His mom is an addict, in and out of rehab, and in and out of Jarrett's life. His father is a mystery -- Jarrett doesn't know where to find him, or even what his name is. Jarrett lives with his grandparents -- two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people who had thought they were through with raising children until Jarrett came along.

Jarrett goes through his childhood trying to make his non-normal life as normal as possible, finding a way to express himself through drawing even as so little is being said to him about what's going on. Only as a teenager can Jarrett begin to piece together the truth of his family, reckoning with his mother and tracking down his father.

Hey, Kiddo is a profoundly important memoir about growing up in a family grappling with addiction, and finding the art that helps you survive.

This was wonderful graphic novel memoir. Complex characterizations. Gorgeous art. Striking colors. All around a great package. The author's use of materials saved from though out his life added tremendously to the authenticity of the narrative. Even the use of his grandmother's wallpaper as background for the chapter headings helped evoke the feelings and sensations that were being evoked. I cannot praise this book enough. Beautiful. Touching. Powerful.

"It’s easy to get caught up in the sorrowful pieces of Krosoczka’s life, with addiction and family dynamics at the center. Throughout the story, I found hope and a sense of love and support, even when things were tough. Adults who encouraged young Jarrett. Friends who stuck around for the long term. Grandparents who provided stability. I loved the inclusion of real life drawings from young-Jarrett’s past.
Hey, Kiddo is a book that could open old wounds for those of us with family addiction in our past but I left feeling rekindled and reminded that through the bad, there is good. The message of hope and resilience is strong. I hope everyone finds room in their heart and libraries for this book!" Christy

Papa Goose

Location: NF 920 QUE
Genre: Geese and science and a man

The charming true story of one man’s journey to raise seven goslings in the name of science.

In Papa Goose, Michael Quetting shares the hilarious and moving true story of how he became a father to seven rambunctious goslings―and the surprising things he learned along the way. Starting right at the beginning, with the eggs, his journey takes him from the incubator all the way to the airstrip, where he must attempt to teach the geese to fly as part of an ambitious scientific research initiative for the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, which tracks animal migrations around the world. For the next eleven months, we follow the newly minted dad as he takes the goslings on daily swims in the lake, tracks them down when they go astray, and watches their personalities develop: feisty, churlish, and lovable. Packed with charm and humor, Papa Goose quickly draws us into the adventure as Gloria, Nemo, and the rest of the crew conquer land, water, and air.

"A scientist at something of a crossroads in his personal life, sets out on an intensive science experiment, learning a lot about nature, and himself. He imprints on seven goslings, and becomes their father, in the hope of getting new flying data from them. The experiment is full of ups and downs and an awful lot of goose dropping. It's a sweet, and funny little book with interesting scientific detail and plenty of popular philosophy designed to make us think about our priorities." Amy

The Huntress

By: Kate Quinn

Genre: Historical WWII

This quote is so true and m,y hope is our generation is one that is building a good wall, not a wall to keep people out, not a wall to barricade, but a wall that stops war, that builds generations of good people who care, honour and support other human beings.

“Building a generation is like building a wall—one good well-made brick at a time, one good well-made child at a time. Enough good bricks, you have a good wall. Enough good children, you have a generation that won’t start a world-enveloping war.”

From the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling novel, The Alice Network, comes another fascinating historical novel about a battle-haunted English journalist and a Russian female bomber pilot who join forces to track the Huntress, a Nazi war criminal gone to ground in America.

In the aftermath of war, the hunter becomes the hunted…

Bold, reckless Nina Markova grows up on the icy edge of Soviet Russia, dreaming of flight and fearing nothing. When the tide of war sweeps over her homeland, she gambles everything to join the infamous Night Witches, an all-female night bomber regiment wreaking havoc on Hitler’s eastern front. But when she is downed behind enemy lines and thrown across the path of a lethal Nazi murderess known as the Huntress, Nina must use all her wits to survive.

British war correspondent Ian Graham has witnessed the horrors of war from Omaha Beach to the Nuremberg Trials. He abandons journalism after the war to become a Nazi hunter, yet one target eludes him: the Huntress. Fierce, disciplined Ian must join forces with brazen, cocksure Nina, the only witness to escape the Huntress alive. But a shared secret could derail their mission, unless Ian and Nina force themselves to confront it.

Seventeen-year-old Jordan McBride grows up in post WWII Boston, determined despite family opposition to become a photographer. At first delighted when her long-widowed father brings home a fiancée, Jordan grows increasingly disquieted by the soft-spoken German widow who seems to be hiding something. Armed only with her camera and her wits, Jordan delves into her new stepmother’s past and slowly realizes there are mysteries buried deep in her family. But Jordan’s search for the truth may threaten all she holds dear.

Peony lives with her sister and grandfather on a fruit farm outside the city. In a world where real bees are extinct, the quickest, bravest kids climb the fruit trees and pollinate the flowers by hand.
Will Peony's grit and quick thinking be enough to keep her safe?
A story about family, loyalty, kindness and bravery, set against an all-too possible future where climate change has forever changed the way we live.

I love Dimitys review on this book in Goodreads

This is a brave story set in Australia in the not-too-distant future but has global implications that allow readers to feel as though they could be anywhere on the planet despite the odd geographical reference. Peony lives with her sister and aging grandfather on a fruit farm. Her chief aspiration is to be a Bee - the bravest, most nimble of farm workers who flit from tree to tree pollinating flowers by hand. If this sounds like a concept that is slightly askew, by the time you've experience MacDibble's palpably natural narrative, it'll be one you are thoroughly familiar if not comfortable with. Could this be the end of the world as we know it or, as I'd rather believe, just another notable chapter in the history of humans being humans - badly.

Whatever your take on climate change and the way we treat the planet, How to Bee, never wallows in despair or hindsight and neither does Peony. When she is taken from her home by a mother who aspires more than just the meager country existence the rest of her family and friends endure, her brassy drive and cast-iron determination draw her right back to the home she loves, like a bee to its hive. But not before she spreads a little hope and good sense in the big scary city.

This story will make you grin, cheer, cry just a bit and want to fly with Peony as she Bees. It's about being true to yourself, to those who love you, about liv
ing your dreams wildly and the profound power of friendship. It could also quite possible change your whole outlook of and appreciation for fruit. More highly recommended than an apple a day.

This cover, oh my. It is stunning!

“At once fresh, at once classic, Onyx and Ivory is a page-turning blend of monsters, magic, and romance.” —Susan Dennard, New York Times bestselling author of Truthwitch

Acclaimed author Mindee Arnett thrusts readers into a beautiful, dangerous, and magical world in this stunningly epic and romantic fantasy for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sarah Raasch.

“There is no greater weapon than knowledge.”

They call her Traitor Kate. It’s a title Kate Brighton inherited from her father after he tried to assassinate the high king of Rime.

Cast out of the nobility, Kate now works for the royal courier service. Only the most skilled ride for the Relay and only the fastest survive, for when night falls, the drakes—deadly flightless dragons—come out to hunt. Fortunately, Kate has a secret edge: She is a wilder, born with forbidden magic that allows her to influence the minds of animals.

And it’s this magic that leads her to a caravan massacred by drakes in broad daylight—the only survivor Corwin Tormaine, the son of the king. Her first love, the boy she swore to forget after he condemned her father to death.

With their paths once more entangled, Kate and Corwin must put the past behind them to face this new threat and an even darker menace stirring in the kingdom.

"This story encompasses powerful and dangerous magic, dragon-like creatures called drakes, courtly intrigue, well built friendships, faithful horses and compelling romance. I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for something that is both traditional fantasy but also something new entirely! I absolutely loved it and was sucked in the moment I started it. "

Genre:  Sci Fi - Thriller

“Soule’s The Oracle Year is like a sliding puzzle, except every time you think you can predict what the image will be, new pieces slide into place. It’s a wonderfully mysterious thriller that proves Soule is as much a master of prose as he is of comic book script.” Chuck Wendig

From bestselling comic-book franchise writer Charles Soule comes a clever and witty first novel of a twentysomething New Yorker who wakes up one morning with the power to predict the future—perfect for fans of Joe Hill and Brad Meltzer.

Knowledge is power. So when an unassuming Manhattan bassist named Will Dando awakens from a dream one morning with 108 predictions about the future in his head, he rapidly finds himself the most powerful man in the world. Protecting his anonymity by calling himself the Oracle, he sets up a heavily guarded Web site with the help of his friend Hamza to selectively announce his revelations. In no time, global corporations are offering him millions for exclusive access, eager to profit from his prophecies.

He's also making a lot of high-powered enemies, from the President of the United States and a nationally prominent televangelist to a warlord with a nuclear missile and an assassin grandmother. Legions of cyber spies are unleashed to hack the Site—as it's come to be called—and the best manhunters money can buy are deployed not only to unmask the Oracle but to take him out of the game entirely. With only a handful of people he can trust—including a beautiful journalist—it's all Will can do just to survive, elude exposure, and protect those he loves long enough to use his knowledge to save the world.

Delivering fast-paced adventure on a global scale as well as sharp-witted satire on our concepts of power and faith, Marvel writer Charles Soule's audacious debut novel takes readers on a rollicking ride where it's impossible to predict what will happen next.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart

By: Holly Ringland
Location: FIC RIN
Genre: Contemporary Fiction

"It is a fierce and assured piece of writing that makes a solid commentary on family dynamics, domestic drama and self discovery." Amanda

“The more she cried, the more Alice believed she really did have some of the sea inside her.”

This is an irresistible, deeply moving and romantic story of a young girl, daughter of an abusive father, who has to learn the hard way that she can break the patterns of the past, live on her own terms and find her own strength.

After her family suffers a tragedy when she is nine years old, Alice Hart is forced to leave her idyllic seaside home. She is taken in by her estranged grandmother, June, a flower farmer who raises Alice on the language of Australian native flowers, a way to say the things that are too hard to speak. But Alice also learns that there are secrets within secrets about her past. Under the watchful eye of June and The Flowers, women who run the farm, Alice grows up. But an unexpected betrayal sends her reeling, and she flees to the dramatically beautiful central Australian desert. Alice thinks she has found solace, until she falls in love with Dylan, a charismatic and ultimately dangerous man.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart is a story about stories: those we inherit, those we select to define us, and those we decide to hide. It is a novel about the secrets we keep and how they haunt us, and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive. Spanning twenty years, set between the lush sugar cane fields by the sea, a native Australian flower farm, and a celestial crater in the central desert, Alice must go on a journey to discover that the most powerful story she will ever possess is her own.

"There are some powerful and highly relevant themes explored in The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, all of which are subjected to the accomplished hand of Holly Ringland. While there is heartbreaking sadness in the form of loss, domestic violence, lost love, betrayal, long held secrets, survival and trauma. On the other hand, there are themes of renewal, acceptance and self fulfillment. It takes real skill to balance the careful dichotomy between sadness and hope, but Ringland gets it just right. As a debut writer, I was blown away by her talent." Amanda

But to her new family, she is Saylor, the name her mother always called her.

Then there’s Roo, the boy who was her very best friend when she was little. Roo holds the key to her family’s history, and slowly, he helps her put the pieces together about her past. It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic of North Lake—and Saylor finds herself falling under Roo’s spell as well.

For Saylor, it’s like a whole new world is opening up to her. But when it’s time to go back home, which side of her will win out?

Who was Mary?
How old was she?
Was she beautiful?
Did becoming a mum to Jesus destroy her, or make her?

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a truly extraordinary woman. And after 2000 years, the story of her brave and remarkable life continues to inspire and enthrall us, as that young woman from Nazareth was never 'just a girl'.

In 72 AD, as the Roman army pillages Judea and destroys their village, fourteen-year-old Judith hidesher younger sister, her great-grandmother Rabba, a Roman slave called Caius and an unwilling goat in a cave used to store food.

Judith's skills will save them as wolves - and humans - threaten the group during that long, icy winter. There are feasts to enjoy as they listen to Rabba tell stories of her youth; of her wealthy marriage in Jerusalem and her life in Nazareth as a child.

But there is one story Rabba will not tell, no matter how much they coax her. It is the story of Maryiam, her beloved friend who faced the scandal and shame of an unwed pregnancy and the anguish of watching the crucifixion.

And it is Maryiam's example that will give Judith, her sister and Caius the courage to step beyond their refuge. Because like Judith, Maryiam of Nazareth was never 'just a girl'.

Genre Sci Fi Dystopia

In this tense, page-turning story of survival in near-future England, Jacob must go to all lengths to find his dog and escape to freedom with a gang of rebel children.
In a frighteningly real near future England, Jacob escapes from the Academy orphanage to reenter a world that is grimly recognizable. The Coalition can track anyone, anywhere, from a chip implanted at birth. Now Jacob must fulfill his promise to his parents, find his dog, Jet, and navigate his way out of England. Their only hope is a band of children who have found a way to survive off the grid: The Outwalkers. Their rules are strict, but necessary if they're going to get out alive...

Outwalkers follows a gang of kids and their perilous journey to make it through a country where the government is tracking everyone and their every move is analyzed and controlled. They must live on their wits, and must work together to survive and escape.

"Starts out with a boy’s tense midnight escape from an orphanage and danger fraught trip to reunite with his beloved dog, and then plot twists and turns continue apace after that. Are all the plot machinations realistic? No but who cares, it is a fantastic wild ride through the English countryside and into the deep underbelly of London. Even with the crazy race course of a plot, the many characters are individualistic and have growth throughout the story. I can’t tell you how many times tears came to my eyes from the poignancy of the writing. Oh Jet, I love you so, ya big hairy lug. While the immediate story is tied up at the end, there are still story lines that must be developed in a further book please." Tracett

Genre; Verse Novel. Mental Illness

Right before winter break, fourteen-year-old Molly Rosenberg reluctantly volunteers to participate in Santa Monica’s annual homeless count, just to get her school’s community service requirement out of the way. But when she ends up meeting Red, a spirited homeless girl only a few years older than she is, Molly makes it her mission to reunite her with her family in time for Christmas. This turns out to be extremely difficult—because Red refuses to talk about her past. There are things Molly won’t talk about either. Like the awful thing that happened last winter. She may never be ready to talk about that. Not to Red, or to Cristo, the soulful boy she meets while riding the Ferris wheel one afternoon.

When Molly realizes that the friends who Red keeps mentioning are nothing more than voices inside Red’s head, she becomes even more concerned about her well-being. How will Molly keep her safe until she can figure out a way to get Red home? In Sonya Sones’ latest novel, two girls, with much more in common than they realize, give each other a new perspective on the meaning of family, friendship, and forgiveness.

"This book was SO awesome. I loved the protagonist and her mission, felt her holes, and loved the dash of romance which felt SO almost 15. I also loved the dog. What a beautiful, beautiful book." Elsa
