Trail of Broken Wings

Image
By: Sejal Badani Genre: Contemporary Fiction- abuse Location: FIC BAD    My Mum is my hero, my mum lived with heinous abuse from a father who with anger and malice, controlled, beat, mocked and tore apart his children. My mum bore the brunt of that and its scars. Her stories feel to me like they should be in this book- like she should be one of the daughters. Except mum has broken the cycle and won the path to recovery- which is why she is my hero. Forever thankful mum! Dont read this book if you want a happy read, this book is about abuse, about suffering, about powerlessness and brokenness. “What he did to you can never be undone. But don’t let it color your life. Don’t let his actions or his way of living become your truth.” As their father lies in a coma, three Indian American sisters reunite with their mother at the bedside of the ailing patriarch. We learn the back story of this broken family, and the women they have become as a result. Three adult sisters, ...

The Girl from Everywhere

Image
By: Heidi Heilig Location: FIC HEI Genre:Magical Fantasy It was the kind of August day that hinted at monsoons, and the year was 1774, though not for very much longer. Ahh Monsoons- just been in those in India! Monsoon weather speaks- it has a voice. you feel it in the air! When you feel it- you reprimand yourself for not bringing your umbrella. This book has monsoons, and pirate ships and maps, refugees, treasure and love....  almost sounds like "The Princess Bride" inconceivably -as you like it! A journey through time. A journey to love! Sixteen-year-old Nix Song is a time-traveller. She, her father and their crew of time refugees travel the world aboard The Temptation, a glorious pirate ship stuffed with treasures both typical and mythical. Mrs Featonby is back!

Image
Hi everyone, While Mrs Bichan is in India I promised her that I would try and write a blog entry or two. I decided that these holidays I was going to start at 'A' in the library and take out every book that I wanted to. Well... I may have gotten a little carried away and worked myself to 'C' before I stopped and thought about how I was going to carry all of my books home. Mrs Mannell looked impressed with my selection (not so sure about the student librarians on duty though... I kept on bringing books up!) Anyhow- I am reading a book that the library has had since 2013- so let's call this blog post a 'Throwback'. By: Linda Castillo Location: FIC CAS Genre: Detective/Crime This is book one in a detective series= LOVE. And yes, I also have out the second book. Kate Burkholder grew up in the Amish community and revisits it when a suspicious crime takes place. She revisits the community she grew up in, and is forced to reflect on who she was and ...

Anatomy of a Misft

Image
By: Andrea portes location: FIC POR Genre: Youth fiction- love or not, maybe and with whom What a read! Anatomy of a Misfit is filled with sarcasm, humor, and a whole lot of spunk. This is one of those books where you hear the voice of the story perfectly in your head. Sarcasm included. You’re taken on an emotional roller coaster as you work your way through the pages. One minute you’re laughing, the next you’re in compete and utter shock! I never really knew what was coming, but the short chapters that seemed like a “fast forward” was a hint that told me something was coming. I felt like this depicted high school perfectly in a way. There will always be that popular girl who needs the attention 24/7. Her sidekicks who will struggle to find their own voices, but one who will help lead the other one to do so. The popular boy with the older brother everyone loves. And the guy who went through a complete makeover over the summer but is still considered the nerd. It’s the circle of li...
