Trail of Broken Wings

By: Sejal Badani
Genre: Contemporary Fiction- abuse
Location: FIC BAD

My Mum is my hero, my mum lived with heinous abuse from a father who with anger and malice, controlled, beat, mocked and tore apart his children. My mum bore the brunt of that and its scars. Her stories feel to me like they should be in this book- like she should be one of the daughters. Except mum has broken the cycle and won the path to recovery- which is why she is my hero. Forever thankful mum!
Dont read this book if you want a happy read, this book is about abuse, about suffering, about powerlessness and brokenness.

“What he did to you can never be undone. But don’t let it color your life. Don’t let his actions or his way of living become your truth.”
As their father lies in a coma, three Indian American sisters reunite with their mother at the bedside of the ailing patriarch. We learn the back story of this broken family, and the women they have become as a result.

Three adult sisters, Sonja, Marin and Trisha, along with their mother, Ranee, take turns sitting at the hospital bed of their father, Brent. None of them love Brent, but otherwise, their feelings are constricted and messed up. The doctor comments on how faithful and full of love they must be as a family because more than most, one of them is there every day. Wordless, they become silent and look at their feet. Will they ever have the courage to talk about the elephant in the room - Brent's abuse?

With the exception of Sonja, all of them are married. However, every one of them is unhappy and still struggling with the effects of their father's abuse. Their marriages are full of secrets and lies because they have never spoken of the hitting and the slapping, the bruises and the name-calling. Marin's daughter Gia struggles to keep up with Marin's rigid exacting demands of scholastic excellence, no excuses, as Marin works and works and works, climbing the ladder of career success after success. Trisha's smile rarely falters as her house and body are kept as beautiful as she can manage with the wealth her husband provides, her life kept smooth and efficient and perfect, but childless. Sonja finally left home after she told her father she would not go to college and study to be a lawyer, but instead she wanted to be a photographer, and her mother told her she should have aborted Sonja. . They all have seen Brent beat Ranee bloody.

Now Brent is on a ventilator, near death. As the days go by, and they speak of 'pulling the plug', each of them suddenly finds they are in crisis, coming apart. Continuing the pretense this family is normal does not work anymore. The father's abuse has been a poison killing all of them. Can they fix it?

“Some moments in your life you wish never happened; you would do anything to take them back. They make you realize you are not all-powerful. That there is a force stronger than you at work. In those moments, you fall to your knees and abdicate all sense of power. Offer your hand and ask for help. If you are lucky, you will feel the touch of something or someone to help you rise. If not, you stay kneeling, left all alone.”   Sejal BadaniTrail of Broken Wings

The Girl from Everywhere

By: Heidi Heilig
Location: FIC HEI
Genre:Magical Fantasy

It was the kind of August day that hinted at monsoons, and the year was 1774, though not for very much longer.

Ahh Monsoons- just been in those in India! Monsoon weather speaks- it has a voice. you feel it in the air! When you feel it- you reprimand yourself for not bringing your umbrella. This book has monsoons, and pirate ships and maps, refugees, treasure and love....  almost sounds like "The Princess Bride" inconceivably -as you like it!

A journey through time.
A journey to love!

Sixteen-year-old Nix Song is a time-traveller. She, her father and their crew of time refugees travel the world aboard The Temptation, a glorious pirate ship stuffed with treasures both typical and mythical. Old maps allow Nix and her father to navigate not just to distant lands, but distant times - although a map will only take you somewhere once. And Nix's father is only interested in one time, and one place: Honolulu 1868. A time before Nix was born, and her mother was alive. Something that puts Nix's existence rather dangerously in question...

Nix has grown used to her father's obsession, but only because she's convinced it can't work. But then a map falls into her father's lap that changes everything. And when Nix refuses to help, her father threatens to maroon Kashmir, her only friend (and perhaps, only love) in a time where Nix will never be able to find him. And if Nix has learned one thing, it's that losing the person you love is a torment that no one can withstand. Nix must work out what she wants, who she is, and where she really belongs before time runs out on her forever.

Mrs Featonby is back!

Hi everyone,

While Mrs Bichan is in India I promised her that I would try and write a blog entry or two.

I decided that these holidays I was going to start at 'A' in the library and take out every book that I wanted to. Well... I may have gotten a little carried away and worked myself to 'C' before I stopped and thought about how I was going to carry all of my books home. Mrs Mannell looked impressed with my selection (not so sure about the student librarians on duty though... I kept on bringing books up!)

Anyhow- I am reading a book that the library has had since 2013- so let's call this blog post a 'Throwback'.

By: Linda Castillo
Location: FIC CAS
Genre: Detective/Crime

This is book one in a detective series= LOVE. And yes, I also have out the second book.
Kate Burkholder grew up in the Amish community and revisits it when a suspicious crime takes place.
She revisits the community she grew up in, and is forced to reflect on who she was and who she is.
If you love crime and you enjoy new series- this is one for you!

Crown's Game

By: Evelyn Skye
Location: FIC SKY
Genre:  Russian Fantasy
Series: The Crowns Game #1

Amazing cover art and magical super powers- this book looks and sounds awesome.

“Imagine, and it shall be.
There are no limits.”
― Evelyn SkyeThe Crown's Game

I hereby swear my loyalty to the tsar,
And promise to abide by the rules of the Game,
A duel of enchantment, until a winner is declared.
To this and all traditions here before established, I commit myself
As an enchanter in the Crown's Game.

Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air.

They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side. And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love . . . or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear . . . the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

Anatomy of a Misft

By: Andrea portes
location: FIC POR
Genre: Youth fiction- love or not, maybe and with whom

What a read! Anatomy of a Misfit is filled with sarcasm, humor, and a whole lot of spunk. This is one of those books where you hear the voice of the story perfectly in your head. Sarcasm included. You’re taken on an emotional roller coaster as you work your way through the pages. One minute you’re laughing, the next you’re in compete and utter shock! I never really knew what was coming, but the short chapters that seemed like a “fast forward” was a hint that told me something was coming.

I felt like this depicted high school perfectly in a way. There will always be that popular girl who needs the attention 24/7. Her sidekicks who will struggle to find their own voices, but one who will help lead the other one to do so. The popular boy with the older brother everyone loves. And the guy who went through a complete makeover over the summer but is still considered the nerd. It’s the circle of life in the high school food chain.

But this isn’t just a quirky read about the woes of a high school girl. This book is so much more. It has so much depth, that at times, I needed to put the book down and take a deep breath before continuing on. Be sure to take a deep breath because the ending will knock it right out of you and leave you stumbling over your own emotions. Man! What a punch to the gut, not only to me as a reader, but to Anika, the voice of the story. So much heaviness, but the reality is…it happens. It’s a good reminder that you never know what the person next to you is going through.

I truly enjoyed this unique read and will certainly be purchasing a copy for my own bookshelves. Yes, it’s a heavy read, but it’s a pleasant reminder to use your own voice and to not worry about what other people are thinking about you. Follow your heart or else it might be too late.
