This is a modern Gothic horror and it integrates so many intriguing factors that it was hard to put down.
I loved:
- The documents throughout the novel (letters, cipher puzzles, notes between characters, postcards, video recording dictations, diary entries...)
- The fact that the protagonist's main sidekick is mute
- Mystery + whodunnit
- The protagonist A and his personality
This is a Gothic ghost story mixed with a modern treasure hunt and is really enjoyable to read.
23 year old A. appears to randomly inherit a huge big estate (Axton House) after the death of a second cousin. His second cousin had committed suicide by jumping out of the third floor bedroom window (at the same age and spot his father had)...
A. and Niamh (mute friend and sidekick) realise that there is so much more to the story and the house as they become aware the house is haunted and there are many secrets buried. Everything is figured out through the puzzles, diary entries, notes between Niamh and A., postcards, letters, and traditional creative writing.
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to see if Cantero creates another one in a similar style.
